Planning and design for community-led housing – video

How can planning and design collaborate to improve opportunities for affordable housing in Brighton & Hove?

This was under discussion at this community-led housing focused workshop on Tuesday 19 June. It explored aspects of community-led housing design and planning, including small homes, ‘meanwhile use’ (making use of temporarily empty buildings and sites) and cohousing design.

The speakers were:

  • Daren Howarth (HUTEC designs, Earthship and Grand Designs) on small homes by choice.
  • Eddie Bridgeman (MeanwhileSpace Community Interest Company, London-based) on meanwhile use.
  • Jonny Anstead (TOWN, developer of Marmalade Lane Cohousing in Cambridge) on cohousing design & planning.

How can innovative housing designs work positively with planning? Examples from community-led housing

Community-led housing projects often challenge norms of living and building, either to make homes affordable or to enable greater sharing and mutual support within neighbourhoods. But planning often works on ‘fitting in’ with what’s already built and conventional standards. How can these two important things collaborate to improve opportunities for affordable housing in the city?

This free event on Tuesday 19 June, 2.00-4.30pm in central Brighton will explore aspects of community-led housing design and planning, including small homes, ‘meanwhile use’ (making use of temporarily empty buildings and sites) and cohousing design.

It will be a chance for groups to discuss with planners and people in the construction and architecture sectors the innovative ways community-led housing can be done. We will also hear from people with a range experience in this area, including:

  • Small homes by choice – Daren Howarth of HUTEC designs, Earthship and Grand Designs
  • Meanwhile useMeanwhileSpace Community Interest Company, London-based
  • Cohousing design & planning – Jonny Anstead of TOWN, developer of Marmalade Lane Cohousing in Cambridge

There will be plenty of time for questions and discussion.

We have limited places available. Please email admin@bhclt.org.uk as soon as possible to find out more and sign up.

The workshop is free, but we require participants to become BHCLT members (fee £1). Join here: bhclt.org.uk/membership

The workshop room is accessible by lift and there is an accessible toilet on same floor; the room has mostly natural light with some strip lighting. If anyone requires a BSL interpreter to enable them to participate, please let us know as soon as possible and we will do our best to hire one. Also if anyone requires large print handouts of the slides so they can follow during the presentation, we will do our best to get them from the speakers.

All welcome to join us for a drink after the workshop in a nearby pub. Unfortunately, the pub is not wheelchair accessible.
