On 10 March 2017 Brighton and Hove Community Land Trust Limited (BHCLT) was registered by the Financial Conduct Authority as a Community Benefit Society registered under the Co-operative and Community Benefit Societies Act 2014. The Society’s register number is 7502.
The Objects of the Society are:
3.1 The Society is formed for the benefit of the community to operate as a Community Land Trust in the Brighton and Hove area (the “area of benefit”).
3.2 The Objects of the Society are to further, in a sustainable manner, the social, economic and/or environmental interests of people who live and/or work, or who want to live and/or work, in the area of benefit by some or all of the following means:
3.2.1 by acquiring, holding, providing, leasing, developing and managing land and other assets in the area of benefit;
3.2.2 by promoting, supporting, developing and facilitating community-led land or other asset-based initiatives, resources and services (including but not limited to housing, community facilities, community businesses, renewable energy and sustainable land management projects); and
3.2.3 by carrying out any other activity that the directors consider would further the social, economic and environmental interests of the community in the area of benefit relating to the stewardship of land and other assets, and the Society shall ensure that any land or assets it owns are not sold or developed except in a manner which the Society approves as being of benefit to the people who live and/or work in the area of benefit.
Application for membership of the Society is open to individuals over the age of sixteen who live and/or work in the area in which the Society operates, or organisations, interested in promoting the Objects.
Membership does not carry any right to housing – that will be up to any individual projects that BHCLT develops or supports. At present we do not have any housing.
